TEMPERATURE

What is a dog's normal body temperature, and how do I take the temperature?

101 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit is normal. It is easy to take with a rectal thermometer, by applying Vaseline or any similar lubricant and inserting into the rectum about 1 to 2 inches. You should keep it there for at least one minute. Many thermometers have a beeper to indicate when to remove it. Touching the nose does not tell you if they have a temperature, because they are warmer than we are anyway. Body temperature may be higher on hot days or when the pet is active or excited. The temperature may even be 103 to 103.5.
